Food and other thoughts…

Half-inhaled espresso creme brulee

Mmm…I shall go torch my last espresso creme brulee in a few minutes.

Since I moved two months ago, I’ve been trying to cook a lot more often. When I lived with the ex-boyfriend, I rarely cooked myself. He was a chef so he cooked a good deal and his mom cooked for us a lot as well. But I never cooked. I’m a good cook. I really missed it.

So I’ve been cooking quite a bit since I moved. On the stove right now, I have black bean soup simmering. I’ve made a lot of things lately that I’ve never attempted before. Like black bean soup (which will be pureed and served with sour cream and crispy tortilla strips just like we serve it at work when it’s the soup of the day). I’ve also made mushroom soup with shitake, cremini & oyster mushrooms. Then there’s the Thai beef salad I made last week. I’m trying to be a little more experimental with my cooking.

In addition to all of the cooking, I’m trying to eat slightly better. I’m still not even close to eating healthy but I’m doing better. I’ve had fast food once since I moved and it was Chick-Fil-A and after watching two very large women eat their ginormous portions, I couldn’t even finish my little sandwich and fries. I’m making a genuine effort to see how long I can go without fast food. So far I’m doing well.

My new boyfriend probably helps the eating slightly better thing as he doesn’t eat a lot of meat, doesn’t eat fast food, drinks pretty much only water and milk, and doesn’t really like going out to eat. Yet he works in a restaurant. And loves desserts. Go figure. But his eating habits may ever so slightly rub off on me. I’m defnitely trying to cook things that I know he’ll eat. It’s no fun to cook for just one person.

The Tuesday night cocktail parties I’ve been having are cool as well because I’ve tried to have something for people to munch on each week. Even if it’s just salsa or a fresh cucumber-sour cream dip. This week I’m not making anything…just cheese and salami and bread ends from a local sandwich shop.

Now I have to stop eating crap at work. I cut out sodas at work (and at home) in January and am doing well with that as I only have them when I go to eat in other restaurants and every now and again I cave at work and have a small cup of Pepsi. Not eating fried stuff at work is hard…but I’m trying.

On the non-food related front, I’m still doing well. The new apartment and new boyfriend are fantastic. Living 3 minutes from work is great. I’ve finally gotten around to putting away the couple of random boxes lying around the apartment. And I went through my closet last night and got rid of at least 50 pieces of clothing.

I haven’t been knitting at all. The Wicked sweater is so close to done but I can’t will myself to finish it. I have nearly finished one Wicked mitt knit in Malabrigo yarn…I just need to add the thumb. I blame the lack of knitting on it being summer AND the new boyfriend occupying a lot of my time. It’s probably really because I’ve been lazy.

That’s it for the second.

Margarita Tuesday makes people smile!

I’m slacking on the updates here.

The photo is from what is likely to become a weekly gathering in my apartment. It was initially dubbed “Margarita Tuesday” because of the type of booze we were drinking. This week’s theme is actually wine. I need to come up with some sort of food to make for tomorrow’s shindig. Hopefully too many people aren’t going to stop by…I’d really like to keep the party to a whisper. No dull roars here.

At any rate, life is good. I’m busy. Work has been a bit hectic lately. I’m having some work issues that are not at all related to me…but I can’t really talk about it.

Maybe I’ll post something about knitting again at some point in the future. All I’ve done lately is knit 10 rows of a fingerless mitt in Malabrigo yarn. And I wound a bunch of yarn balls after a few drinks a couple of weeks ago. There are photos of me doing this but I don’t have a copy of them yet. Expect a post soon with a photo.

That’s it for now. I’m off to read Harry Potter #5 and to flip through a cookbook to find something to make for tomorrow night.
