babycakes

Miniature Devil’s Food Cake, originally uploaded by meliass.

A couple of weeks ago I wanted to bake another cake because the amaretto cake was nearly gone. Instead of baking a normal cake, I decided to bake numerous mini cakes.

The cake pictured above is sitting on a bread plate if that helps to visualize the size a little better than the quarter does.

I started with the Devil’s Food Cake recipe in Baking Illustrated. I doctored their recipe a little bit with additional chocolate, espresso powder, and some Godiva liqueur. The cake turned out super dense and super chocolately and super delicious…which was my intention.

I then made a mocha buttercream…using the basic chocolate buttercream recipe in Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. I then added lots of espresso powder and a little bit of Starbucks coffee liqueur.

Teeny Tiny Cake

The Devil’s Food Cake recipe made 3 decently thick layers…I then used various circular cookie cutters to make my mini cakes. In all honesty, cutting layer upon layer of mini cakes was much easier than cutting a normal cake layer in two.

It took me a couple of hours to finish them all, but I ended up with 10 or 11 mini cakes…in 3 or 4 different sizes. The largest might have been 4 inches across and the smallest was 1 1/2 or 2 inches! They were so cute that I’ll definitely make them again.

In addition to making the cakes because I wanted to make them, I chose chocolate because the boyfriend needed some pictures of chocolate cake for a web page picture and couldn’t find any good pictures himself…so I made the cake and took the pictures he needed.

P.S. They’re making progress on the house. If they continue at the rate of progress made in the last week, they could finish it by the date they originally said they would. But they’ll probably quit working for a couple of weeks for no known reason. Either way, we started packing things again. My living room has become the home of packed boxes.

There are some not so attractive photos of me devouring that particular mini cake after I took the pictures of it in the boyfriend’s hand. Needless to say, those aren’t going to find their way to my Flickr page or my blog. :)

Finally!! I found your blog! I’ve been scouring the net after seeing your pics on flickr. I’m a fan of your simple yet intrinsic food pictures. The lighting is always dead-on not to mention they look devilishly delicious.

I found you through Foodgawker as well, and I’m not only captivated by the delicious cake, but curious! Did you bake them originally in normal-sized cake pans and then use the cookie cutters to cut them out, or what? I ought to do this myself.

What an amazingly clever idea! I thought you had found baby cake pans and baked them in those. I love cutting things into small rounds, like brownies or blondies. And this also gives you a higher ratio of icing to cake!

    Gorgeous pictures too.

How cute is that? I would so eat that in like 2 bites! Really nice job, congrats.

    Thanks for all the compliments!

In case anyone else missed it, these were baked in normal cake pans and cut with cookie cutters…it was quite easy…especially if you freeze the cakes before cutting them.

P.S. I am also ALL about the higher frosting to cake ratio. Sure, the cake’s good…but it’s boring without the frosting!

Those are just the prettiest little cakes! They would make a lovely little gift arranged on a mini cake pedestal!
